If I am easily distracted,
If I am quick to give up on a task,
If I quit projects more readily than finish them,
I know nothing yet of determination.
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank:” —Daniel 1:8.
What a picture of determination! Daniel purposed in his heart to follow a course of action that would be neither easy nor well looked upon by his earthly masters. He was, after all, a captive and slave with not many choices remaining in his life. He decided that God would not be pleased if he partook of the king’s meat and drink. He then determined to follow through upon that conviction to the end. Once he decided on keeping himself pure from the king’s meat and drink, he held to it without wavering with a faith that God would carry him through.
There are other passages in the Bible where Daniel exhibited determination, including continuing to pray in his open window when the consequence was to be cast into a den of lions. If we seek to be used of God as Daniel was, we must have determination to follow God through persecution and dangers also. We must work at developing determination each and every day, or we will not have it when we need it.
